Vaccinations & Preventatives

Protecting your pet from preventable diseases is one of the most important things you can do for their health. At Oceanside Veterinary Clinic, we follow the latest veterinary guidelines to provide core and lifestyle-based vaccines, along with essential parasite prevention tailored to your pet’s needs.

At Oceanside Veterinary Clinic, we prioritize your pet’s health by adhering to the latest vaccination guidelines from the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) and the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP). These guidelines recommend core vaccines for all pets, including:

For Dogs:
• Rabies: Essential for preventing this fatal disease and often mandated by law.
• DA2PPV: Protects against Distemper, Adenovirus (Hepatitis), Parvovirus, and Parainfluenza.
• Leptospirosis: Recently reclassified as a core vaccine by the AAHA, it’s now recommended for all dogs starting at 12 weeks of age.

For Cats:
• Rabies: Vital for preventing rabies transmission.
• FVRCP: Guards against Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia.
• Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV): Considered a core vaccine for kittens and young cats under one year old.

We tailor our vaccination protocols to each pet’s lifestyle and risk factors, ensuring they receive the most appropriate protection. In addition to core vaccines, we may recommend non-core vaccines based on your pet’s specific needs:

For Dogs:
• Bordetella and Canine Influenza: Advised for dogs that frequent social settings like dog parks or boarding facilities.

For Cats:
• FeLV: Recommended for adult cats with outdoor access or those living with FeLV-positive cats.

Preventative care also includes protection against parasites such as fleas, ticks, heartworms, and intestinal worms. Even indoor pets are at risk and should be on appropriate preventative medications.
