There are many reasons that vaccinations are important for your pets. Vaccinations help prevent many illnesses, help you avoid costly treatments, and also save lives. Some communities, facilities, or even state laws require certain protocols for your furry family members. Here we will dive into why vaccinations are important, the common core vaccinations, and vaccinations based on your pet’s lifestyle.

What Vaccinations are Important

Here at Oceanside Veterinary Clinic, we believe having your pet vaccinated strongly protects your furry family member from diseases in all sorts of environments such as the outdoors, when visiting kennels, or even at the groomer. There are two types of vaccination groups: Common core vaccinations and lifestyle vaccinations. The following have prevented the deaths of millions of animals and protect your babies from things such as rabies, distemper, and general wildlife.

Common Vaccinations for Dog’s Include:

  • Rabies – a preventable viral disease caught through the bite of other rabid animals
  • Hepatitis – this virus is a contagious disease that causes inflammation of the liver and other organs
  • Distemper – helps prevent coughing and fevers
  • Parainfluenza – a respiratory virus
  • Parvo-Virus – causes an infectious gastrointestinal illness in young dogs, and without treatment, it is potentially deadly
  • Corona – is acute respiratory infection, and is part of the complex of viruses and bacteria associated with canine infectious respiratory disease

Common Vaccinations for Cat’s Include:

  • Rabies – a preventable viral disease caught through the bite of other rabid animals
  • Feline Leukemia – this disease is not a form of cancer, but can cause cancer
  • Panleukopenia – help prevent feline distemper

Vaccinations Based on Lifestyle:

  • Bordetella – to prevent kennel cough
  • Rattlesnake – helps stimulate the immune system to produce antibodies against venom
  • Influenza H3N2 – helps with respiratory protection
  • Leptospirosis – a bacterial infection that can be caught from puddles or bodies of water that carry urine from infected wildlife.
